Convicted Nigerian Fugitive Extradited To US Over Offer, Payment Of Illegal Remuneration

Florence Enwerim Onyegbu, a convicted Nigerian fugitive, was extradited to the United States of America, USA, on Thursday, where she is wanted to answer to criminal charges bordering on violation of US law involving the offer and payment of illegal remuneration in a health care matter.

Her extradition was arranged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in response to a request from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for assistance in her capture.

The EFCC discovered that she had changed her name from Florence E. Onyegbu to Janet Boi in order to remain anonymous.

She, however, ran out of luck when EFCC agents swooped on her at her home in Lagos’s Ojodu neighborhood on February 21, 2022.

A national identity card with the name Janet Boi and a Texas driver’s license with the name Florence Enwerim Onyegbu were discovered on her during her arrest.

Following an extradition order granted by Justice Z.B. Abubakar of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on December 2, 2022, the Commission handed over Onyegbu to the FBI on March 22, 2023.

Onyegbu’s troubles began when she was arrested in the United States on February 12, 2011 and sentenced to 46 months in prison after pleading guilty to a violation of US law relating to the offer and payment of illegal remuneration in a health care matter.

She was supposed to report for service of her sentence on April 4, 2011, but she did not show up.

As a result, on March 4, 2013, she was charged with failing to surrender for sentence service in violation of US law.
