Despite government efforts to regulate prices between N7,000 and N8,000 per 50kg bag, retail figures have consistently exceeded these thresholds, causing concern in the construction sector.
Major cement producers like BUA, Dangote, Lafarge, and Ibeto were engaged in negotiations to establish a price range aimed at ensuring affordability and controlling market inflation.
However, reports from various regions, notably Lagos, reveal retail prices ranging from N10,000 to N11,000 per bag, well above the agreed ceiling.
Here’s a breakdown of current market prices from different manufacturers:
- Dangote Cement Plc: Prices range from N11,000 to N12,500 per bag.
- Lafarge Africa Plc: Retail rates vary between N12,000 and N14,000 per bag.
- BUA Cement: Selling at approximately N10,000 to N11,000 per bag.
- UNICEM Cement: Priced similarly to Lafarge, between N12,000 and N14,000 per bag.
- Ibeto Cement: Retail prices fall within the range of N10,000 to N11,000 per bag.
These price hikes have underscored the complexities influencing cement prices, including raw material costs, energy expenses, transportation challenges, foreign exchange rates, and demand-supply dynamics.
Key cement-producing states in Nigeria include Ogun, Benue, Edo, Cross River, and Kogi, each contributing significantly to the country’s cement output.
As stakeholders navigate these challenges, understanding the factors shaping cement prices and production dynamics becomes crucial for the construction and real estate sectors.
