Deadly Clash Erupts As Boko Haram, ISWAP Fighters Battle In Lake Chad

Scores of terrorists have reportedly been killed following a violent confrontation between two rival insurgent factions, Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS), popularly known as Boko Haram, and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), in the Lake Chad Islands.

According to security reports, the clash occurred around Mangari and Tumbun Allura areas of the Lake Chad region, where fighters from both groups engaged in a fierce battle over territorial influence, movement routes and operational control.

According to Ireporter Online, sources familiar with the development revealed that JAS gained an advantage during the encounter, killing several ISWAP fighters, capturing two boats and later retreating to its Kurnawa base.

The exact number of casualties could not be independently confirmed at the time of reporting, but intelligence reports indicated that the confrontation resulted in significant losses on both sides.

The latest incident highlights the continued rivalry between Boko Haram and ISWAP, two factions that have repeatedly clashed over dominance, resources, recruitment networks and control of strategic locations within the Lake Chad basin.

Security sources stated that the captured boats could affect ISWAP’s operations, as watercraft are vital for transporting fighters, weapons, supplies and logistics across the challenging waterways of the region.

Following the clash, military formations around Lake Chad were reportedly placed on heightened alert, with troops in areas including Mallam Fatori, Baga, Cross Kauwa and Kukawa monitoring developments and tracking possible movements of fleeing fighters.

Security officials expressed concerns that surviving terrorists could attempt fresh attacks, ambushes or other violent operations while trying to escape pressure from rival groups and security forces.

The internal conflict between the insurgent groups is also being assessed by authorities as a possible opportunity to weaken their structures, disrupt their supply networks and encourage some fighters to surrender.

However, security experts warned that the clashes could also trigger retaliatory attacks as weakened factions attempt to regain influence and recover lost ground.

Military authorities are reportedly considering intensified operations, including increased patrols, intelligence gathering and surveillance activities, to exploit the divisions among the terrorist groups and prevent them from regrouping.

Security agencies have continued to monitor the Lake Chad region closely, stressing the need for sustained operations to protect communities and reduce threats posed by insurgent activities.
