Deji Adeyanju: Sowore’s Presidency Would Shake Nigerian Politics, Unlike ‘Decent’ Peter Obi

Nigerian lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has shared his views on the leadership qualities needed for Nigeria’s presidency. He described Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, as too decent and nice for the role. Instead, Adeyanju believes that Omoyele Sowore, the two-time presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), is the kind of leader Nigeria needs.

In an interview on ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast, Adeyanju emphasized the need for a strong leader, suggesting that Peter Obi does not fit this description. He said, “Peter is just a decent guy, nice guy… Nigeria needs somebody that the idea of him coming alone, they [corrupt people] have already run away.”

Adeyanju pointed out that Sowore represents the type of leadership that would make many politicians fear for their positions. He stated, “If someone like Omoyele Sowore by divine providence becomes President; before he is sworn in, Nigeria will empty. All the politicians will run away.”

He also mentioned a statement made by former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, during a peace accord, where Abubakar reportedly said, “Sowore, if you enter [the presidency], all of us are finished.”

Adeyanju’s comments highlight a significant difference in opinion regarding the type of leadership that would benefit Nigeria the most. While Peter Obi is seen as a decent and nice individual, Adeyanju argues that a more formidable leader like Sowore is what the country needs to combat corruption and enforce accountability.
