Allegations suggest that the destruction of the community was a retaliatory act by aggrieved soldiers mourning the loss of their colleagues.

As fear grips residents, many have fled to the neighbouring town of Ughelli to escape the escalating violence.

The deadly assault on the soldiers occurred last Thursday, prompting a widespread manhunt led by Major General Jamal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding 6 Division Nigerian Army.

Numerous arrests have been made in connection with the killings, and the military has intensified its presence in the area, conducting patrols in the creeks to apprehend those responsible for the heinous act.

The recovery of the soldiers’ lifeless bodies by the joint task force under Major General Abdussalam’s supervision has sent shockwaves throughout the region. Some of the deceased were found in a gruesome state, with reports of beheadings and mutilations underscoring the brutality of the attack.

Among the victims were senior military officers, including a commanding officer and two majors, whose bodies were discovered near the NDDC jetty in the coastal Delta community.

This tragic incident has garnered widespread condemnation and is now under investigation following directives from the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, who has ordered a thorough probe into the killings.

According to Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Acting Director of Defence Information, the troops were ambushed and killed while responding to a distress call amid a communal crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities in the Bomadi Local Government Area.
