This policy shift marks the end of over a decade of restrictions and allows Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to carry out operations in places traditionally considered sanctuaries.

In a statement released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the administration underscored its commitment to removing spaces where individuals could evade law enforcement.

“Criminals will no longer find refuge in America’s schools and churches to escape justice,” the statement declared. “The Trump administration trusts our brave law enforcement officers to exercise discretion and enforce immigration laws effectively.”

Acting DHS Secretary Benjamine Huffman introduced the directive, which also reinstates nationwide expedited removal policies. Under this measure, undocumented individuals who cannot provide evidence of continuous residency in the U.S. for over two years face immediate deportation.

These measures are part of a broader crackdown on immigration. President Trump signed a series of executive orders this week aimed at tightening border control, including suspending the refugee program, blocking access to entry facilitation apps, and increasing collaboration between ICE and local law enforcement agencies.

Tom Homan, Trump’s border czar, confirmed that ICE would begin nationwide operations to arrest and deport undocumented immigrants immediately, asserting the administration’s intent to enforce immigration laws more vigorously.

Backlash from Advocacy Groups and Religious Leaders
Immigration advocacy organizations have strongly condemned the new policies. The Center for Law and Social Policy warned that they could deter immigrant families from accessing critical services, such as healthcare, education, and disaster relief, while subjecting children to potentially traumatic encounters with immigration agents.

Religious leaders also voiced opposition, calling for compassion. During a sermon at an inaugural prayer service, the Episcopal bishop of Washington urged the administration to consider the plight of vulnerable immigrant communities.

The changes signal an intensified focus on immigration enforcement, sparking fears among immigrant families and drawing sharp criticism from human rights groups and faith-based organization.
