Devastating LA Fires Prompt Massive Federal Response

Speaking from the White House, Biden addressed the federal response and dismissed claims made by incoming President Donald Trump.

Biden convened a meeting with senior administration officials, emphasizing the severity of the situation and praising firefighters for their courage, calling them “heroes” for risking their lives to combat the flames.

“This is a nightmare for the people of Los Angeles,” Biden said, pledging full federal support. He announced the deployment of 400 federal firefighters, 30 aircraft, and helicopters to assist, along with an additional eight large planes and 500 personnel from the Pentagon for wildfire clearance.

The president also confirmed that the federal government would cover 100% of disaster response costs for the first 180 days, in response to a request from California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Vice President Kamala Harris, a California native, called the fires “apocalyptic” and criticized insurance companies for canceling coverage for affected families.

Biden refuted Trump’s claim that a water shortage was hindering firefighting efforts, explaining that power outages had taken water pumps offline. The outages occurred as utility companies shut down electricity to prevent faulty power lines from sparking further fires.

Trump, who is set to begin his second term on January 20, has used the crisis to launch political attacks on both Biden and Governor Newsom.

Biden canceled a scheduled trip to Rome to remain in Washington and coordinate federal relief efforts. So far, the wildfires have claimed at least six lives and continue to threaten countless homes across Los Angeles.
