According to Ireporter Online, the dollar-to-naira exchange rate at the parallel market, commonly referred to as the black market or Aboki FX, remained relatively high on Monday, January 26, 2025.

Market findings indicate that foreign exchange dealers at the Lagos parallel market sold the United States dollar at ₦1,490, while buyers purchased the greenback at ₦1,482. The rates reflect ongoing volatility in the informal foreign exchange market, which continues to operate outside official regulatory frameworks.

Currency traders noted that exchange rates in the black market often fluctuate based on demand and supply dynamics, and prices may differ slightly across locations. Meanwhile, the Central Bank of Nigeria has repeatedly stated that it does not recognize transactions carried out in the parallel market, advising individuals and businesses seeking foreign exchange to channel their requests through licensed commercial banks.

At the official window, the CBN’s exchange rate for the dollar to the naira stood between ₦1,415 and ₦1,422, highlighting a persistent gap between the official and parallel market rates. Analysts attribute the disparity to forex liquidity constraints and sustained demand pressure in the informal market.
