Economic Alarm Bells: Nigeria’s World Bank Debt Climbs By $600 Million In Three Months
Nigeria’s debt to the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) has surged to $17.1 billion as of September 30, 2024, according to the World Bank’s latest financial statements. This marks a $600 million increase from $16.5 billion in June 2024.…..READ MORE
Key Highlights:
- Nigeria retains its position as the third-largest IDA debtor, following Bangladesh ($21 billion) and Pakistan ($18.5 billion).
- The country’s IDA debt rose by $2.8 billion during President Tinubu’s administration.
- In comparison, India, Ethiopia, and Kenya owe $15.9 billion, $13.1 billion, and $12.4 billion, respectively.
The IDA’s concessional loans, known for their low interest rates and extended repayment periods, remain critical to Nigeria’s funding strategy amidst ongoing economic challenges.
Debt Service Costs Rise:
Between January and September 2024, Nigeria allocated $3.58 billion to service its foreign debt, a 39.77% increase from $2.56 billion during the same period in 2023.
These growing payments underscore the financial strain on the country’s fiscal balance as the government pursues economic reforms while grappling with inherited debts.
