The two-day protest initiated by the Labour union commenced on Tuesday in Abuja, Lagos, and various other cities across the nation, with demonstrators urging swift action from the government to address the ongoing economic turmoil.

In response to these events, Omokri, a former presidential aide, has asserted that protests are unlikely to yield any significant impact on the economy. Instead, he proposes two strategic approaches to bolster the economic landscape.

Omokri advocates for economic enhancement through two primary avenues: firstly, he suggests that state governors emulate the federal government’s initiative by granting higher wages to state employees. Additionally, he encourages Nigerians to prioritize purchasing locally made products to bolster the local currency against the US dollar.

In a statement shared on his official platform, Omokri remarked, “Protesting to demand an end to economic hardship is counterintuitive. History has shown that economic hardship is alleviated through sound economic policies, not through protests, which are typically aimed at addressing injustices. To effectively tackle hardship, we must implement constructive economic measures.”

He further elaborated on his proposed solutions, stating, “Firstly, urge your state government to implement a wage increase similar to the federal government’s initiative, whereby federal workers receive an additional ₦35,000 alongside their salaries. Given that states are now receiving a 69% increase in federal allocation following the removal of fuel subsidies, there is ample room for them to accommodate such wage adjustments without significant strain.

“Secondly, embrace the #GrowNairaBuyNaija initiative. Observing the attire worn by protesters, it is evident that many rely on imported goods, which contributes to the devaluation of our currency. By supporting locally made products, we can strengthen our economy and mitigate the factors contributing to economic hardship.”

Omokri’s proposals underscore the importance of implementing targeted economic policies to address the root causes of economic challenges, rather than relying solely on protests as a means of effecting change.
