Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and media institutions express alarm over the potential ramifications of the departure of the three nations, citing concerns about the stability and effectiveness of the 49-year-old regional body.
Stakeholders, including CISLAC, WACSOF, TMG, and ThisDay newspapers, convene in Lagos to discuss the state of ECOWAS and regional integration, urging leaders to prioritize dialogue and democratic restoration in the affected countries.
Addressing the forum, the Executive Director of CISLAC highlights the need for ECOWAS to uphold its founding principles of economic cooperation and collective security, emphasizing the imperative of a united front against terrorism and trans-border crimes.
Amid calls for enhanced citizen engagement and consultation, CSOs advocate for the removal of sanctions on Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, urging swift measures to foster reconciliation and democratic governance in the region.
In a series of recommendations, stakeholders call for immediate dialogue with the affected countries, the rescinding of withdrawal decisions, and intensified efforts towards electoral transparency and inclusivity.
As West Africa grapples with geopolitical challenges and internal strife, the urgency for regional cohesion and democratic resilience becomes ever more pressing, underscoring the imperative of collective action and dialogue in shaping a prosperous and stable future for the continent.
