In a bold diplomatic maneuver to address the recent decision by Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President Bola Tinubu has dispatched a high-level delegation to engage with the governments of these nations.

The delegation, led by Defence Minister Abubakar Badaru and Foreign Affairs Minister Amb. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, alongside other senior government officials, operates under the auspices of ECOWAS President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray.

The withdrawal of the trio from ECOWAS, announced on Sunday, January 28, following the imposition of military regimes and the severance of diplomatic ties with France, signals a significant shift in regional dynamics.

This development has spurred sanctions from the regional bloc, amid concerns over its potential impact on security and economic stability, particularly for Nigeria grappling with insurgency challenges and economic pressures.

Recognizing the critical nature of security and economic ties within the ECOWAS region, President Tinubu’s delegation embarks on a mission to address these concerns, aiming to foster dialogue and explore solutions to the challenges posed by the departure of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso.

During an extraordinary session of the ECOWAS mediation and security council, Amb. Tuggar emphasized the delegation’s commitment to tackling pressing issues facing member states, including climate change, violent extremism, migration, and organized crime.

Defence Minister Badaru echoed this sentiment, reaffirming Nigeria’s dedication to regional security collaboration and underscoring the importance of collective action to address security challenges.

“Nigeria remains committed to working hand in hand with our ECOWAS counterparts to ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens,” stated Defence Minister Badaru, highlighting Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to regional peace and stability.

The engagement by President Tinubu’s delegation with the governments of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso signifies a pivotal step towards reconciling differences within the ECOWAS community and strengthening regional cooperation and security.
