The ₦12 billion intervention fund released by the Federal Government to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for the payment of players’ wages and bonuses is currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

According to Ireporter Online, the development emerged after the NFF declined a request for access to documents detailing how the funds were managed and spent, explaining that the relevant records had been submitted to the two anti-corruption agencies.

The federation disclosed this in a letter dated August 18, 2026, signed by Onoja Joshua, Esq., on behalf of the NFF General Secretary.

The response followed a Freedom of Information request submitted by the Principal Partner of Cromwell & Okeke, who sought financial statements, utilisation records and other documents relating to the ₦12 billion intervention fund.

The law firm submitted its request on August 7, although the NFF said it received the application on August 11.

In its response, the football federation stated that it could not provide the requested documents because the financial records were connected to ongoing investigations by the EFCC and ICPC.

The NFF explained that the documents were no longer in its custody, having been handed over to the anti-corruption agencies as part of the investigations.

The federation stated that the subject of the Freedom of Information request was already under scrutiny by both agencies and that all relevant records were currently with them.

The development is expected to intensify attention on the management of the Federal Government’s intervention funds provided to the NFF for settling outstanding players’ wages and bonuses.

The investigations by the EFCC and ICPC could provide further clarity on how the ₦12 billion was utilised and whether the funds were applied strictly for the purposes for which they were released.
