Nigerians Have Sense’ – Islamic Cleric Sends Strong Message Ahead Of 2027
Islamic scholar Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa has urged Nigerians to assess political candidates based on their competence, previous achievements and ability to provide good governance rather than their religious affiliations.
According to Ireporter Online, Daurawa made the call on Wednesday during an interview with DW while reacting to recent comments by fellow Islamic cleric Sheikh Sani Jingir in support of a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.
Daurawa argued that religion should not be the primary consideration when Nigerians decide who to support at the polls. Instead, he encouraged voters to examine the records of candidates and consider what they have accomplished in the past and what they are capable of delivering in office.
“Nigerians have sense. They should judge candidates by what they will do and what they have done, not by religion,” he said.
The cleric maintained that politics should primarily be about competence, accountability and service to the people rather than the religious identity of candidates.
He also pointed out that Nigeria’s Constitution and electoral system do not recognise political parties as either Islamic or Christian organisations.
Daurawa questioned whether the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered any political party as an Islamic or Christian party or approved a religious manifesto for any political platform.
He stressed that Nigerians should be free to support candidates regardless of whether their tickets are Muslim-Muslim, Christian-Christian, Muslim-Christian or Christian-Muslim.
The Islamic scholar further cautioned Nigerians against insulting, attacking or discriminating against others because of the religious composition of political tickets.
As the country prepares for the 2027 elections, Daurawa also appealed to Nigerian youths to avoid drug abuse, political violence and the possession or use of weapons.
He urged young people to participate actively but peacefully in the electoral process and reject actions capable of undermining peace and stability across the country.
