EFCC Responds: Malami Failed To Meet Bail Conditions, Skipped Multiple Summons
According to Ireporter Online, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that the revocation of administrative bail for former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, was not politically motivated. The agency emphasized that it operates in an apolitical manner.
The statement comes in response to allegations that Malami’s bail was withdrawn due to his association with opposition parties, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The EFCC explained that Malami was granted provisional bail following a brief interrogation on November 28, 2025, but failed to fulfill any of the stipulated conditions or demonstrate readiness to comply with them.
The EFCC added that the former minister was repeatedly invited to appear before investigators but cited ill health and failed to attend. The commission also refuted claims that Malami was prohibited from giving media interviews or participating in political activities, urging him to focus on meeting his bail requirements instead of making public allegations.
The commission highlighted that administrative bail is a discretionary, temporary release contingent on specific conditions pending investigation and arraignment. Malami was initially scheduled for further questioning on December 1, 2025, which was postponed to December 4 at his request, but no credible medical documentation was provided. He was subsequently invited again on December 8, 2025, and detained until the bail conditions are met.
The EFCC dismissed Malami’s claims of political interference as “untenable” and reiterated that it has no interest in the political affiliations of suspects. The commission advised the former minister to cooperate with investigators and comply with the five conditions he acknowledged on November 28, 2025.
