the APC stalwart and former governor of Osun State emphasized the need for federal lawmakers to abandon the 1999 Constitution, crafted under military rule.
Akande highlighted the ongoing debate about restructuring Nigeria, asserting that a significant stride in this direction could be achieved by returning to the 1960 Constitution. He expressed his conviction that the current 1999 Constitution lacks authenticity, being devoid of a collective or democratic process during its creation.
Underlining the flaws of the 1999 Constitution, Akande remarked that it lacked a specific author, suggesting a lack of representation and inclusivity in its formulation. He urged the National Assembly to reconsider and critically examine the foundational legal document of the nation.
Akande conveyed his preference for the 1960 constitution, citing its unique features. In this constitution, members of the national and state assembly served part-time roles, attending to their primary occupations. He noted that this practice fostered a genuine commitment to public service.
Expressing discontent with the influence of money and lavish spending introduced by the military into politics, Akande lamented the departure from the original ethos of public service.
He emphasized the need for politicians to retrace their steps and advocated discarding the present constitution in favor of the 1960 version. Akande urged a careful consideration of present-day realities for necessary adjustments.
