Ex-Minister Labaran Maku Quits PDP In Sh*cking Political Move

A former Minister of Information and ex-Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Labaran Maku, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), declaring his intention to galvanise widespread support for the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Ireporter Online, Maku made the announcement on Tuesday while addressing journalists in the presence of SDP officials at his residence in Wakama, located in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area. He explained that his decision was driven by a desire to actively contribute to the growth and expansion of the SDP both within Nasarawa State and across the country.

The former minister stated that his move was also inspired by a commitment to honour the legacies of notable figures such as the late MKO Abiola and former Senator Godiya Akwashiki, whom he described as one of the most impactful lawmakers produced by Nasarawa North and the state at large. He highlighted Akwashiki’s developmental strides across communities as a model of effective representation.

Maku expressed confidence that his defection would significantly strengthen the SDP’s political base, noting that the party already maintains a presence in all 13 local government areas of the state. He also pointed to his previous record in public service, including efforts in job creation, empowerment initiatives, and infrastructural development, assuring party members of his commitment to securing electoral victories for the SDP before, during, and after the 2027 polls.

He further hinted at the possibility of contesting for the Nasarawa North senatorial seat, following appeals from stakeholders in Akwanga, Nasarawa Eggon, and Wamba constituencies after the passing of Akwashiki. However, he maintained that any such decision would be subject to party directives and approval by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Maku cautioned against the imposition of political successors by state governors, warning that such practices undermine democratic values. He called for improved governance and urged citizens to maintain unity and peaceful coexistence as a foundation for sustainable development.

In his remarks, the SDP Zonal Chairman for Nasarawa North Senatorial District, Mohammed Audu, welcomed Maku into the party, assuring him of equal rights and opportunities within its structure.

Meanwhile, in a formal resignation letter addressed to the PDP chairman of Wakama Electoral Ward, Maku attributed his departure to the prolonged internal crisis within the party. He noted that his decision followed extensive consultations with family members, political allies, traditional leaders, and supporters, describing the move as necessary in light of the prevailing challenges and the collective desire for a new political direction.

Despite his exit, Maku expressed appreciation to the PDP for the opportunities afforded him over the years, pledging to uphold shared values for the benefit of the people.
