Faction Withdraws Support As Bakers Launch Nationwide Strike
Tension grips the baking industry as a schism emerges, with one faction retracting its support for the impending nationwide strike called by a faction within the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria……READ ALSO Bakers Threaten Shutdown (See Why)
Scheduled to commence on February 27, the strike aimed to press the Federal Government into honoring agreements made with the association in 2020, including the establishment of a price control and monitoring committee to enhance the business environment.
However, the Supreme Bakers and Confectioners Association of Nigeria has issued a counter-statement on Monday, denouncing the strike as ill-timed and potentially exacerbating the challenges faced by Nigerians.
Acting National President, Edmund Egbuji, urged members to abstain from participating in the strike, citing concerns over the nation’s food insecurity and scarcity.
In the statement, Egbuji emphasized, “The BOT chairman and the entire members of the board of trustees, in conjunction with the national exco of Supreme Bakers and Confectioners Association of Nigeria, wish to bring to the notice of the general public that Supreme Bakers Association will not embark on a nationwide withdrawal of services (strike) proposed by some bakers association in the country.
“Supreme bakers deem it as unpatriotic at this time of food insecurity and scarcity in the country. Going on strike will never be an option rather the government through its relevant ministries should call for a roundtable discussion to cushion the effects of food scarcity plight.
“All members of the supreme bakers are hereby directed to go about the business of feeding the nation as any contrary action will add to the pains of the overstretched citizens.”
As tensions escalate within the baking community, the rift between factions threatens to disrupt the industry and further strain the nation’s food supply chain.
