The Federal Government has disclosed that more than 730 individuals have been successfully convicted for offences tied to terrorism as part of a strategic effort to dismantle terrorism financing networks and combat extremist operations across Nigeria.

According to iReporter Online, this revelation was made by Major General Adamu Laka, National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), during a critical on-site meeting with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) held in Abuja. He emphasized that over 90 of these convictions were facilitated with direct support from the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), reflecting a well-coordinated inter-agency synergy in tracking the financial lifelines of terror cells.

He stated that disrupting terrorist funding remains at the heart of Nigeria’s national security agenda, further reiterating the government’s unwavering commitment to sustained collaboration with local and global partners, including the U.S. Department of Treasury. According to iReporter Online, General Laka noted that these collective efforts have yielded tangible results, demonstrated by the successful prosecution of hundreds of terrorism-linked cases.

The NCTC chief also applauded the Joint Standard Investigation Committee on Terrorism Financing, describing its operations as instrumental to Nigeria’s ability to investigate and prosecute high-level financial crimes. He explained that the ongoing simulation exercise was designed to assess Nigeria’s institutional preparedness and strengthen the country’s standing ahead of the FATF’s evaluation visit, which will influence Nigeria’s status on the organization’s Grey List.

According to iReporter Online, Hajiya Hafsat Bakari, the Chief Executive Officer of the NFIU, highlighted the country’s remarkable progress in fulfilling the 19 action points outlined in the FATF action plan. She described the assessment as pivotal, noting that the international spotlight was firmly on Nigeria, with 11 expert reviewers expected to examine the country’s compliance across all key indicators.

Bakari expressed optimism over the FATF’s confidence in Nigeria’s anti-financial crime framework, revealing that the country had been invited to participate as a guest member of the FATF—an acknowledgment of Nigeria’s growing regional and global influence in the counterterrorism finance arena. While this status falls short of full membership, she described it as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward securing a permanent seat at the global table.

Both Laka and Bakari urged all stakeholders to remain committed to the nation’s counterterrorism goals and intensify support for anti-financial crime operations, underscoring the national importance of the FATF review and the opportunity it presents for Nigeria’s long-awaited removal from the Grey List.
