FG Unveils Mega Skills Revolution As 3,000 Abuja Youths Begin Paid Training

The Federal Government has commenced the Innovation Development and Effectiveness in the Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme as part of renewed efforts to curb rising youth unemployment. According to Ireporter Online, the initiative officially kicked off in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), marking the start of an intensive technical and vocational training cycle for young Nigerians.

Under the scheme, 3,000 youths in the Abuja training zone are expected to undergo skills acquisition programmes over a six-month period. Participants will receive monthly stipends and starter packs at the completion of their training to support their transition into the workforce or entrepreneurship.

Speaking during the launch at the Federal Science and Technical College (FSTC), Orozo, National Project Coordinator of the IDEAS Project, Blessing Ogwu, said the government has put in place a robust monitoring structure to ensure effective execution. She explained that every local government area has designated officers mandated to track activities and forward reports to the central monitoring and evaluation unit, alongside zonal officers and an independent third-party assess­ment team reporting directly to the Minister of Education.

Ogwu added that sustainability was factored into the programme’s funding architecture to guarantee long-term affordability. She noted that the initiative aligns with broader reforms aimed at strengthening technical education nationwide, including the conversion of former science and technical colleges into full-fledged technical institutions.

Chairman of the Training Service Providers Committee, Dr. Bright Omezuike, revealed that 20 accredited training providers participated in the flag-off, each assigned 20 trainees for the first phase. He said the orientation was designed to ensure that participants understood the programme’s objectives clearly, adding that the enthusiasm recorded so far signals a promising future for the initiative.

Director and Principal of FSTC Orozo, Omale Frank, described the launch as a landmark step in national efforts to empower the youth with market-driven competencies. He noted that the IDEAS TVET model was crafted to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical livelihood, urging young Nigerians to seize the opportunity to build sustainable careers.

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Education, had earlier secured credit for the World Bank–supported IDEAS project, which aims to overhaul the country’s TVET system by improving skills delivery using a comprehensive, industry-aligned approach. Officials noted that the programme integrates private-sector collaboration to ensure graduates are better matched to labour market needs.
