FG Unveils Powerful Intelligence Overhaul To Crush Emerging Security Threats

According to Ireporter Online, the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to integrate intelligence across the military as Nigeria confronts increasingly complex security threats. Defence Minister Muhammed Badaru disclosed this on Monday while declaring open the 2025 Chief of Defence Intelligence Annual Conference in Abuja, noting that President Bola Tinubu remains firmly committed to strengthening national security.

Badaru explained that Nigeria is now dealing with adversaries who leverage modern technology, operate among civilian populations and carry out activities that cut across both physical and digital spheres. He stressed that the nature of threats has shifted, saying they are now defined by the speed and quality of information available rather than terrain or manpower.

The minister commended the Defence Intelligence Agency for deploying advanced technological tools, including the Joint Intelligence Mission Data and Analytics System and upgraded cyber-monitoring capabilities. He described these systems as strategic assets that enhance real-time coordination between the agency, service headquarters and military personnel on the ground.

He, however, emphasised that technology alone is insufficient, insisting that well-trained and disciplined intelligence officers remain the backbone of effective national defence. He assured that the Ministry of Defence would continue to prioritize the training of analysts, cyber specialists and field commanders to maximize the benefits of emerging technologies.

Badaru also underscored the need for stronger cooperation among West African nations, pointing out that improved cross-border intelligence exchange, maritime security partnerships and protection of critical assets are essential for regional peace and stability.

The ongoing four-day conference, which gathers Defence Attachés, Advisers and State Office Coordinators, adopts what the minister described as a bottom-up model for intelligence reform. He urged participants to challenge conventional thinking and produce practical recommendations capable of driving operational progress.

Badaru reiterated that safeguarding Nigeria requires vigilance, innovation and unity, expressing confidence that collaborative efforts will reinforce the country’s security framework. The conference is expected to examine multi-source intelligence, new technologies and strategies for enhancing Nigeria’s overall defence architecture.
