Financial Fears: Why Chelsea Hesitates To Axe Manager Pochettino Despite Struggles
Chelsea Football Club finds itself in a quandary as they grapple with the prospect of parting ways with their underperforming coach, Mauricio Pochettino, due to concerns over breaching Premier League financial fair play regulations….Read More Related Story Here Pochettino On Thin Ice: Chelsea Stumbles 4-2 Against Wolves Amidst Calls For Change
Since his appointment ahead of the 2023-2024 season, Pochettino was tasked with revitalizing Chelsea’s winning tradition. However, the journey has been rocky for the Argentine tactician, particularly in the Premier League.
With only nine wins, four draws, and ten league defeats under his belt, Chelsea languish in the 11th spot with 31 points in 23 games, diminishing their chances of securing a Champions League spot for the next season.
While the club’s European ambitions hang in the balance, their hopes for silverware rest on clinching the FA Cup title or triumphing over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final on February 25, a formidable task given their recent 4-1 defeat to the Reds.
Despite mounting pressure to relieve Pochettino of his duties, Chelsea’s reluctance stems from the hefty £10 million payout they would incur due to the 18 months remaining on his contract. Moreover, a premature termination could potentially breach financial fair play rules, a risk heightened by the club’s staggering £1 billion expenditure since Todd Boehly/Clearlake Capital assumed ownership in 2022.
To alleviate financial strain, Chelsea must offload players worth tens of millions before June to avoid penalties for exceeding spending limits. However, challenges arise from their failure to sell locally developed talents like Armando Broja and Trevoh Chalobah in January, exacerbating their predicament.
In a bid to address their woes, Chelsea is internally scrutinizing their exorbitant transfer outlays to unravel the underlying causes of their dismal season.
