acquitted by a court.
Kanu’s legal team, led by Aloy Ejimakor and supported by Jude Ugwuanyi, Nnaemeka Ejiofor, and Mandela Umegborogu, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja. According to Ejimakor, the challenge highlights what the team deems a grave judicial error in Kanu’s ongoing detention.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu pledges ₦1 million to any law student who can find a precedent where an acquitted individual was restrained from enjoying their freedom through a stay of execution,” Ejimakor stated. He criticized the detention as illegal and claimed it was motivated by bias against Kanu’s Igbo heritage.
Kanu remains in custody despite the Court of Appeal quashing all charges against him, citing jurisdictional violations and breaches of extradition laws between Kenya and Nigeria. His legal team argued that Justice Tsamani’s order to stay Kanu’s release was unprecedented in global legal history.
“The continued detention of Onyendu (Kanu) by the Department of State Services lacks legal backing,” Ejimakor added. “This unlawful act will haunt Nigeria’s judiciary for generations.”
