Political Persecution? Bolsonaro Faces Setback As Court Blocks Travel To Trump’s Event
In a ruling on Thursday, Brazil’s Supreme Court rejected former President Jair Bolsonaro’s request to retrieve his passport and travel to the U.S. for the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump next week. that Bolsonaro still presented a flight risk after his passport was seized last year, as part of an investigation into his alleged involvement in a coup attempt following the 2022 elections.
Judge Alexandre de Moraes emphasized the ongoing risk of “evasion,” citing Bolsonaro’s controversial actions. In response, Bolsonaro criticized the decision, claiming it tarnished Brazil’s global image and reflected the ongoing use of “lawfare” to target him politically.
Before the decision, Bolsonaro had expressed his excitement about the event, calling Trump “the most important person in the world” and eagerly anticipating his potential attendance. He later suggested that an appeal could still be made to reverse the ruling.
While Bolsonaro faces multiple criminal charges in Brazil, including allegations of election manipulation and corruption, his absence at the inauguration means he won’t join the international figures such as Argentina’s President Javier Milei, a staunch Trump supporter, and Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who will attend the ceremony.
Bolsonaro continues to reject the accusations against him, calling them politically motivated and claiming he is being persecuted by Brazil’s justice system.
