From Demotion To Dismissal: Morayo Afolabi Opens Up About TVC Journey

Popular media personality Morayo Afolabi Brown has shared her unexpected path into television, revealing that hosting was never part of her original career plan. Speaking at the Refire Conference, she recounted the early struggles, career setbacks, and eventual rise that defined her broadcasting journey.

Morayo explained that she initially intended to work behind the scenes and doubted her ability to speak confidently on camera, even struggling with stammering. She originally hired Joy Isi Bewaji to host her show, but when the planned host withdrew to focus on writing just before the programme went live, Morayo was thrust into the role herself. Despite her fears, she accepted the challenge, and the show gradually gained recognition.

Her career, however, faced further hurdles. At Television Continental (TVC), she was removed from her position, prompting a confrontation where she defended her contributions. She was eventually rehired, but in a lower role. She continued her work on the programme as a contract staff until 2019, when she formally stepped down from her full-time role.

In 2023, Morayo became a Managing Director, a position she initially viewed as a career milestone, though it did not bring the fulfillment she had hoped for. Her breakthrough came when she developed a new television concept, securing 100 million naira in funding. This inspired her to leave her position at TVC and launch her own programme, The Morayo Show.

Reflecting on her journey, she said: “A few years later, TVC sacked me, I was frustrated and had to fight for my job. Five days later, they rehired me, but I was demoted. In 2019, I resigned, but I was still doing my show as a contract staff. When I became an MD in 2023, I thought I had finally broken through, but I still didn’t feel fulfilled. I wrote a TV show concept and someone gave me 100 million naira. I had to ask myself if I could do this for myself, and I knew it was time to leave. I decided to take the bull by the horn and start again. Till today, every day is a new day, and we keep asking how to make it better. God has already deposited something in you and brings things together to push it out.”

According to media insiders, Morayo’s story illustrates the resilience and determination required to navigate the competitive world of television broadcasting.
