Glitz and Glam as Abubakar Momoh Flags Off Niger Delta Sports Festival Live in Akwa Ibom State

The inaugural Niger Delta Sports Festival commenced with grandeur on April 2, 2025, at the Uyo Township Stadium in  Akwa Ibom State. The event was officially declared open by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who emphasized the festival’s role in promoting unity and nurturing athletic talent within the Niger Delta region.

Engr. Abubakar Momoh, the Minister of Regional Development, attended the ceremony, highlighting the government’s commitment to regional development through sports. The host, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, expressed pride in hosting the festival and underscored the state’s readiness to provide a memorable experience for all participants and visitors. ​

Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State also graced the occasion, reflecting the collective support from the Niger Delta states. The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Alhaji Shehu Dikko , was present, bringing his extensive experience in sports administration to the event. ​

The opening ceremony was a vibrant showcase of the rich cultural heritage of the Niger Delta, featuring performances from all nine participating states. Athletes paraded in a colorful march-past, symbolizing the unity and competitive spirit that the festival aims to foster. ​

With over 3,000 athletes competing in 17 sports categories, the festival promises to be a landmark event in the region’s sporting history. Governor Umo Eno highlighted the festival’s potential to promote regional unity, sports tourism, and talent discovery.

The Niger Delta Sports Festival is set to continue until April 9, 2025, with events spread across multiple venues in Akwa Ibom State, celebrating the athletic prowess and cultural diversity of the Niger Delta region. ​
