Gov Zulum Orders Closure of Borno IDP Camp Housing 11,000 People—Chaos and Uncertainty Loom!

Babagana Zulum, the Governor of Borno State, has officially closed the Muna Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Maiduguri, which housed over 11,000 people.

The Muna IDP camp was one of the largest in the state during the height of the prolonged humanitarian crisis caused by the insurgency.

In announcing the closure, Governor Zulum cited a rise in illegal activities within the camp as the main reason behind the decision.

“We have noticed an increase in prostitution, gangsterism, child abuse, and other criminal behaviors in the IDP camp,” the governor stated.

He stressed that completely defeating Boko Haram depends on resettling displaced persons, emphasizing the importance of people returning to their homes and restoring their livelihoods.

Four years ago, Zulum had pledged to close all twelve official IDP camps in Maiduguri, a promise he has now fulfilled except for two informal camps.

The governor revealed that in 2024, the state government successfully resettled about 75% of the Muna camp’s IDPs, with the remaining 25% expected to return to their communities shortly.

As part of the resettlement plan, each of the 6,000 households will receive food aid, shelter materials, and healthcare services.

Additionally, every household head—regardless of gender—will be given ₦100,000, while housewives will receive an extra ₦50,000.
