Governor Lawal U-Turns: Ready To Negotiate With Bandits If They Surrender Weapons

This marks a notable shift from his previously uncompromising stance against negotiations, as reiterated by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Mobilisation, Alhaji Faruk Ahmad, in July 2024.

At the time, Ahmad had stated, “We will not reconcile with any bandit leader. We will continue fighting them. Those willing to surrender should do so, and those who are not will be fought.”

Despite signaling a willingness for potential talks, Governor Lawal emphasized that security forces are making significant strides in combating armed groups. He disclosed that over 50 terrorists were neutralized in a military operation last Friday in Tungar Fulani, located along the Zurmi/Shinkafi axis.

“We are achieving notable victories in the fight against banditry. Some of the most dangerous kingpins loyal to Bello Turji have been eliminated, including Sani Mainasara, Sani Black, Kachallah Auta, Audu Gajere, Kabiru Jangero, and Dangajere,” Lawal stated.

Additionally, the governor reported that 65 other bandits have been killed in recent security operations.

Governor Lawal stressed that any discussions with bandit groups must be based on genuine commitment to peace and sincerity in their intentions.

“A lot of people have suffered; many have lost their parents and spouses. It’s crucial to address their plight and find ways to support them, rather than focusing solely on negotiating with the bandits,” he said.

He made it clear that his administration would not entertain deceptive truces and warned that any peace talks would be contingent on strict conditions.

“They must either lay down their weapons or face decisive action,” Lawal concluded.
