GPS Will Be Used In Distributing Palliatives To Nigerians – Betta Edu
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, has expressed her commitment to employing advanced technology like the Global Positioning System (GPS) for the distribution of fuel subsidy palliatives and other poverty alleviation items to citizens all across Nigeria.
During an interview with ARISE NEWS on Wednesday, Edu revealed that the current administration intends to collaborate with the private sector and development partners in the mission to eliminate poverty in the nation.
She remarked, “In relation to the palliatives, we need to rethink the logistics. I’ve previously been involved in programs such as immunization initiatives in Cross Rivers State and other regions nationwide where we had to provide healthcare services directly to people’s residences and administer immunizations.”

Edu emphasized that the conventional practice of requiring individuals to gather at specific locations to collect their palliatives isn’t very effective. Instead, the approach should be to enhance the logistics and deliver these items directly to people’s doorsteps.
She explained, “This way, they can acknowledge receipt by signing, and we can be assured that these families have indeed received the assistance. Modern technology, such as GPS, can precisely determine the location of recipients, ensuring that the items are accurately delivered to the intended destinations. It’s a matter of utilizing GPS technology and not necessarily relying on house numbering.”
Edu also unveiled plans to authenticate the social register of Nigerian citizens and establish an accessible database accessible to the public.
“Our primary objective is to validate the social register. We need to establish a comprehensive database that will serve as the foundation for our work, and we intend to make this information transparent and accessible to Nigerians, enabling them to hold us accountable,” she added.
Furthermore, Edu revealed that President Bola Tinubu aims to prevent any Nigerian from enduring poverty. As part of this endeavor, she mentioned that deliberations would take place with key stakeholders over the next two to three weeks to ascertain precise figures for the provision of assistance to each individual or family participating in the poverty alleviation initiative.
Edu concluded, “We have a comprehensive plan outlined according to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision. The blueprint has been thoroughly developed; however, its successful implementation depends on adapting and refining it based on the specific context in which it will be executed. Our approach will be collaborative, involving all levels of Nigerian society. We’ll ensure that the register is verified and updated, and individuals who don’t meet the established criteria will be excluded from the list.”
