The once peaceful town was shattered last year when villagers sought refuge following earlier attacks, only to find themselves plunged into fresh violence on Tuesday.

Amidst escalating tensions and gunshots echoing through the air, the survivor, who chose to remain anonymous, described the terrifying ordeal. “We woke up at about 6 am and started hearing gunshots sound.

It got intensified, so we got out and tried to see or hear what was happening,” she narrated. The violence escalated as the Muslim community mobilized towards the Christian families, creating a sense of fear and vulnerability.

Taking refuge in the COCIN Church, Sabon Kaswa, the survivor detailed the desperate attempts to seek help from security forces.

However, delays and a disturbing lack of intervention marked their ordeal. The survivor’s son, in a bid to secure assistance, encountered a further demand for petrol from the security personnel.

Tragically, the survivor learned that her house was not spared as it became a target for looting and destruction.

The attackers, described as moving menacingly, not only burglarized homes but set them ablaze, leaving a neighbor who couldn’t move due to illness to perish alongside family members.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang expressed deep concern and emotion as he visited the devastated Kwashlalek community, where 27 people perished in a house fire.

Mutfwang attributed the escalation of violence to misguided individuals under the influence of drugs, vowing to intensify efforts to eradicate illicit substances from the state.

The survivor’s account paints a haunting picture of a community torn apart, where cries for help were met with delays, and security forces seemingly failed to prevent the targeted burning of Christian homes.

As Plateau State grapples with the aftermath, questions linger about the effectiveness of security measures and the urgent need for intervention to prevent further tragedy.
