Heavy Downpour Turns Deadly In Kaduna, Claims Lives And Destroys Homes

No fewer than two persons have been confirmed dead following a devastating rainstorm that swept through Dokan Mai-Jama’a community in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, leaving widespread destruction and displacing dozens of families.

According to Ireporter Online, the incident occurred after hours of heavy rainfall accompanied by violent winds that ripped through the community, destroying over 50 houses and rendering many residents homeless. The Village Head of Dokan Mai-Jama’a, Hamisu Tukur, confirmed the development, noting that several buildings were either severely damaged or completely flattened by the storm’s intensity.

Residents said the downpour began around 6:41 p.m. and lasted for about 40 minutes, during which rooftops were blown off, properties were destroyed, and household items were exposed to the elements. Many victims were seen sifting through the wreckage of their homes in search of salvaged belongings, while others described the experience as sudden and traumatic, leaving them with little or no time to protect lives and property.

The disaster also extended to Sabon Gyero in Millennium City, within the same local government area, where more than 10 perimeter fences were reportedly destroyed and several houses damaged. The storm further disrupted movement after a major road in the area was blocked, forcing motorists and commuters to divert routes.

Displaced residents are currently taking refuge with neighbours and relatives, as calls intensify for urgent intervention from the Kaduna State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency. Victims appealed for emergency relief materials including food, shelter, clothing, building materials, and medical support to help them recover from the destruction.

Emergency officials have reportedly commenced assessment of the affected areas, with a NEMA team deployed to evaluate the extent of damage and determine necessary relief measures. The assessment is expected to guide coordinated response efforts by relevant authorities.

Meanwhile, authorities had earlier warned of intensified rainfall patterns this season, raising concerns over possible weather-related disasters in vulnerable communities across northern Nigeria.
