World Chess Championship title starting Monday in Singapore.

Speaking to reporters, Gukesh shared his anticipation: “The world championship is a very special event, and I’ve looked forward to this moment since I started playing chess. My goal is to give my best and see what happens.”

Gukesh earned his place in the championship after a stellar performance at April’s Candidates Tournament in Toronto, where he became the youngest-ever world title contender. A victory in Singapore would make him the youngest undisputed world chess champion, surpassing Garry Kasparov, who claimed the title at 22 in 1985.

While Gukesh is favored by many due to his recent strong performances, Ding Liren, the first Chinese world champion, is not to be underestimated. Ding, who claimed the title in April 2023 after defeating Ian Nepomniachtchi, acknowledged his recent struggles but projected confidence ahead of the match.

“This time, I feel peace and energy,” Ding said. “Although I have more experience, Gukesh has shown maturity and won’t be an easy opponent.”

The match promises to be a historic battle between the seasoned champion and the ambitious young challenger, with the chess world eagerly watching.
