House Of Representatives Calls For Relief-Aid To Ekiti And Ondo Communities-Affected By Rainstorm (View Details)

The House of Representatives has issued a directive to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to promptly dispatch relief materials to communities in Ekiti and Ondo states, which were recently devastated by rainstorms. This action aims to alleviate the suffering of residents grappling with the aftermath of the natural disaster.

Additionally, the House has called upon the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to collaborate with relevant state and local government agencies to initiate the reconstruction and repair of damaged infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and public buildings. Specifically, the affected areas include Itapaji Ekiti in Ikole Local Government and Omu/Ijelu in Oye Local Government, both situated in Ekiti North 1 Federal Constituency.

Moreover, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation have been urged to provide palliative measures to the affected communities on a short, medium, and long-term basis. Over 60,000 constituents have been displaced across communities such as Ogbagi Akoko, Oyin Akoko, Okeagbe Akoko, Ugbe Akoko, and Ikare Akoko in Ondo State.

These directives followed two separate motions presented by Hon. Akintunde Rotimi (APC, Ekiti) and Hon. Ifeoluwa Ehindero (APC, Ondo), drawing attention to the havoc wreaked by the rainstorms in their respective states.

Rotimi highlighted the devastating impact of the rainstorms on residential and commercial properties, public infrastructure, farmlands, and other essential assets in Itapaji Ekiti and Omu/Ijelu. He emphasized the severe hardship experienced by affected residents, including displacement, property loss, and disruption of economic activities.

Expressing concern over potential health hazards and risks faced by the displaced residents and wider communities, Rotimi stressed the urgent need for intervention to mitigate further devastation.

As communities grapple with the aftermath of the rainstorms, the House’s actions signify a concerted effort to address the pressing needs of affected residents and facilitate the restoration of normalcy in the affected areas.
