I Was Initially Accused of Sponsoring the Protest—Peter Obi Responds to Tinubu’s Address
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has responded to President Bola Tinubu’s recent national address regarding the ongoing protests. In a statement posted on his verified Twitter account, Obi conveyed his initial reluctance to react immediately, noting that he wanted to ensure his response aligned with public sentiment.
Obi acknowledged that President Tinubu’s address, while appreciated, came too late to prevent the tragic loss of innocent lives, including those of security personnel. “I appreciate the President’s eventual address to the nation, albeit delayed, which could have prevented the unnecessary loss of innocent lives, including our security agents,” Obi stated.
Despite his acknowledgment, Obi did not hold back from criticizing specific aspects of Tinubu’s speech. He pointed out what he saw as a lack of empathy towards those directly affected by the protests, including individuals who were injured, arrested, or detained due to what he described as the excessive actions of security forces. “While hoping for condolences to the families of protest victims, I also expected empathy for the injured, arrested, and detained due to the overzealous conduct of some security operatives,” Obi remarked.
Obi’s response highlights his consistent advocacy for the rights and welfare of Nigerians, particularly those impacted by civil unrest. His comments serve as a reminder of the need for heightened sensitivity and accountability in how the government responds to public dissent and the actions of law enforcement.
As a former governor of Anambra State, Obi’s carefully balanced critique reflects both an appreciation for the President’s communication and a call for constructive criticism of the administration’s handling of the protests. He emphasizes the urgent need for empathy and systemic reform in addressing the concerns of the Nigerian people.
