Political tensions in Kano have escalated as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has summoned Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, spokesperson to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, for questioning in Abuja.

The police believe Dawakin-Tofa was instrumental in the controversial 2024 suspension of APC National Chairman and former governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, by his ward’s executive committee — a move that stirred widespread political unrest before being disowned by the party leadership.

In a letter dated May 23, 2025, the IGP requested that the Kano State Government release Dawakin-Tofa for interrogation regarding allegations of criminal defamation, impersonation, and incitement. He is expected to appear before SP Mojirode Obisiji at Force Headquarters.

This is not Dawakin-Tofa’s first clash with law enforcement. A similar police invitation in late 2024 led to a legal standoff, with the governor’s aide obtaining a court order shielding him from arrest. That order extended to the IGP, DSS, and Civil Defence operatives, but has failed to halt current police efforts.

The feud between Ganduje and Dawakin-Tofa dates back to 2015, rooted in political rivalry. As 2027 elections approach, the renewed legal pursuit intensifies the political uncertainty in the state.

Dawakin-Tofa’s legal team is currently challenging a High Court’s dismissal of his suit, hoping for relief at the appellate level as Kano’s political climate remains volatile.
