With soaring inflation and the escalating cost of living, many business owners, especially those operating small and medium-scale enterprises, find themselves struggling to stay afloat.
The economic distress, characterized by high living costs and surging prices of goods and food items, has reached alarming levels, exacerbating the purchasing power erosion of the average Nigerian, including business operators.
Entrepreneurship in Nigeria presents formidable hurdles due to high interest rates from financial institutions and inadequate basic and social infrastructure, among other challenges.
According to experts, small business managers in Nigeria face a myriad of obstacles, including limited access to finance for business startup and expansion, deficient infrastructure, unfavorable legislation, stiff competition, lack of awareness, inadequate managerial skills, corruption, and inflation.
Under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, Nigeria’s inflation rate surged to 31.70 percent in February from 29.90 percent in January 2024, as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Despite the government’s tightened monetary policy, as evidenced by the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) record 400 basis points increase in the benchmark interest rate to 22.75 percent during the last Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, inflationary pressures persist.
Nevertheless, amidst rising inflation, interest rates, and other challenges, small-scale business owners continue to persevere, seeking innovative solutions to confront the obstacles they encounter daily.
In an exclusive interview with Naija News, Ada Obidudo, a Lagos-based baker and confectionery expert, lamented the worsening economic conditions in the country, attributing the depreciation of the national currency and the government’s inaction as significant contributors to her business woes.
Similarly, Linda Onwuazombe, a building material trader based in Abeokuta, expressed dismay over the country’s dire economic situation, particularly the adverse effects of the government’s foreign exchange policies on her business, which heavily relies on imported goods.
Both entrepreneurs underscored the urgent need for government intervention, calling on relevant authorities to engage in dialogue with stakeholders to implement policies that safeguard traders and address the prevailing economic challenges.
The persisting economic hardship underscores the imperative for concerted efforts by the government and stakeholders to institute effective economic measures that will alleviate the burdens faced by small business owners and stimulate sustainable economic growth.
