INEC Reacts To Court Order For Resumption Of Voters’ Registration
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has responded to a court order directing it to resume voter registration for the 2023 election.
INEC spokesperson Festus Okoye stated that the continuous voter registration (CVR) exercise could not be restarted.
“It would be constitutionally and legally impossible for the commission to resume the continuous voter registration exercise,” Okoye during a Channels Television interview on Tuesday.

The INEC official cited resource constraints and the mobilization of security personnel as factors impeding the resumption of voter registration.
“It would be constitutionally and legally impossible for the commission to resume the continuous voter registration exercise,” Okoye said.
On Tuesday, a federal high court in Abuja ordered INEC to resume the continuous voter registration (CVR) exercise.
According to Justice Inyang Ekwo, voter registration should be extended until 90 days before the 2023 general election.

The plaintiff in a suit filed by Anajat Salmat and three others argued that INEC cannot halt continuous voter registration before the time limit specified by law.
Justice Ekwo agreed with the plaintiffs and directed the electoral umpire not to deny citizens the right to vote in the upcoming election.
“The case of the plaintiffs succeeds on merit,” the judge declared.
Okoye stated that while INEC “abides and obeys judgments and orders from properly constituted courts of law,” resuming the CVR is unrealistic.
“Realistically, it will be next to impossible for the commission to mobilise the necessary resources to go back and start the CVR,” Okoye said.
“Second, realistically, it will be next to impossible to mobilise the number of personnel required to carry out the exercise.
“It will also be next to impossible to mobilise the number of security personnel that will be required to continue the CVR.”
