INEC to PDP: NEC Meeting Notice Invalid Without National Secretary’s Signature

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declined the notice sent by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regarding its planned 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, citing non-compliance with proper procedure.

In a letter dated June 13, 2025, addressed to the PDP’s Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, INEC stated that the notice did not meet the legal requirements outlined in the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties.

The letter, signed by INEC’s Acting Secretary, Hajiya Hau’ru Aminu, pointed out that the notification failed to adhere to Part 2(12)3 of the regulations, which mandates that both the National Chairman and National Secretary must jointly sign and submit such notices to the commission.

INEC emphasized that the PDP’s notice lacked the co-signature of its National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, rendering it invalid.

While PDP did submit the notice within the stipulated 21-day legal timeframe, it was only endorsed by Acting Chairman Damagum and not jointly signed as required.

The NEC meeting was scheduled to hold at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

INEC concluded its letter with a firm reminder: “The Commission draws your attention that the notice is not in compliance… Be guided.”
