Iran Still Expected To Compete In 2026 FIFA World Cup Despite Rising Tensions

According to reports from reputable sports outlets, Iran’s men’s national football team remains committed to participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Asian football officials confirmed on Monday that the team is scheduled to compete, despite security concerns stemming from ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.

Concerns about the team’s safety were heightened after former United States President Donald Trump cautioned on his social media platform, Truth Social, that the Iranian players could face significant risks if they attended the tournament. Trump emphasized that while the team would be welcome, the prevailing geopolitical climate raised serious safety issues.

The warning follows escalating conflicts after reportedly coordinated US-Israeli strikes in late February, which have intensified instability across the region and cast uncertainty over Iran’s participation in international events. Nevertheless, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) stated there has been no official indication that Iran would withdraw.

Speaking from the AFC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, General Secretary Windsor Paul John said the confederation is closely monitoring developments but reaffirmed that Iran remains on the tournament schedule. “As far as we know, Iran is playing,” he said. “There is no official information that they are not playing. We hope they will resolve their issues and be able to participate in the World Cup. Iran is a top team in Asian football, and their presence is highly anticipated.”

Meanwhile, the situation involving members of Iran’s women’s national football team has drawn international attention. Reports indicate that seven members of the delegation sought asylum in Australia after facing domestic backlash for refusing to sing the national anthem during the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. On Sunday, the team captain withdrew her asylum request, leaving only two members intending to remain in Australia.

Allegations have surfaced that players were pressured to reverse their asylum requests through threats against family members, though Iranian authorities deny these claims and accused Australia of pressuring the players to stay. The AFC confirmed that the players awaiting return travel are currently in Kuala Lumpur, and the confederation will respect whatever decisions they make regarding their departure.
