The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has declared that he will not participate in the 2027 governorship election in Zamfara State, pledging instead to support the incumbent governor, Dauda Lawal, in his bid for re-election.

According to credible media reports, Matawalle made this known during an official reception organised to welcome Lawal into the All Progressives Congress (APC). The development marks a significant political shift, considering that Lawal had unseated Matawalle in the 2023 gubernatorial election.

Addressing party members and stakeholders at the event, Matawalle announced his decision to withdraw from the 2027 race, stating that he would fully back Lawal’s second-term ambition. He emphasised his commitment to working closely with the governor to ensure continuity and progress in the state.

The event was attended by top political figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, former governors such as Abdulaziz Yari, as well as party leaders and stakeholders from across Zamfara State.

In his remarks, Shettima reiterated the Federal Government’s determination to address the lingering security challenges in the state. He assured residents that adequate security personnel and equipment would be deployed to tackle banditry and restore peace.

The Vice President also pledged continued federal support for Lawal’s administration, commending ongoing efforts to improve governance and development in the state.
