JAMB Sets New Age Requirement: Candidates Below 18 Years Ineligible from 2025
Starting in 2025, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) will enforce a new age requirement for candidates intending to take the examination. In a recent announcement, JAMB revealed that individuals below 18 years of age will no longer be permitted to register for or write the exam.
This decision marks a significant shift in the board’s policies, aimed at ensuring that candidates are mature enough to handle the academic challenges and responsibilities associated with higher education. The move is expected to standardize the entry age across tertiary institutions in Nigeria, aligning with global practices.
Previously, candidates as young as 15 years old were allowed to sit for the JAMB examination, leading to instances where students entered universities at a very young age. The new policy is seen as a measure to ensure that students are adequately prepared, both mentally and emotionally, for the rigors of university life.
The age restriction will affect all prospective candidates, regardless of their academic readiness. JAMB has emphasized that this decision is final and will be strictly enforced in all future examinations starting from the 2025 session.
Education stakeholders and parents are encouraged to prepare their wards in line with this new policy. The board believes that this will not only improve the quality of education but also help in reducing the number of underaged students facing challenges in adapting to university environments.
As this policy takes effect, it is crucial for students and guardians to stay informed and plan accordingly to avoid any disruptions in their educational journey.
