June 12 And The Man Who Refused To Surrender: Chief Obaseki Pays Tribute To MKO Abiola — Chief Owen Chamberlain Obaseki
Today, we commemorate 32 years since millions of Nigerians stood in solidarity, queuing up to vote for a visionary leader – MKO Abiola, the Aare Onakankanfo of Yoruba land, my eternal hero and mentor. A philanthropist par excellence, Abiola’s legacy is built on selflessness, generosity, and a commitment to uplifting humanity. His campaign slogan, “Abolishment of Poverty,” resonated deeply with the masses.
A trailblazer in sports development across Africa, Abiola’s impact transcended borders. With 197 chieftaincy titles and global recognition, he embodied the spirit of a true statesman. His widespread acceptability earned him a remarkable victory, defeating his rival, Tofa, even in Tofa’s home state of Kano.
Though the people’s mandate was brutally suppressed, Abiola, as a democrat, refused to surrender his mandate, fighting on till the end. Each time the matter of his surrender was brought up, he would ask, “What about the over 14 million Nigerians who voted for me?” His steadfast commitment to democracy ultimately led him to pay the Supreme price on July 7, 1998, after spending over four years in solitary confinement.
His sacrifice paved the way for Nigeria’s current democratic dispensation. The zoning of the presidency to the Yoruba ethnic group in 1999, with Olu Falae and Olusegun Obasanjo as flag bearers, was a direct consequence of Abiola’s unrelenting commitment to democracy.
MKO Abiola’s legacy is unforgettable. His courage, conviction, and vision continue to inspire generations. As we honour his memory, we reaffirm our commitment to the democratic ideals he fought tirelessly to uphold.
