BREAKING: NLC, TUC Announce Date To Begin Nationwide Strike

The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced a nationwide strike, set to commence on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.

This decision was reached after an extraordinary meeting of the National Executive Council of both unions, held on Tuesday in Abuja.

Both major labour unions have initiated immediate mobilization of their members and allies across the country.

The move by Organised Labour comes in response to the recent assault on NLC National President, Joe Ajaero, in Imo State.

The incident provoked widespread condemnation from Organised Labour, with allegations of Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Mohammed Barde, being implicated in the attack on Ajaero, which occurred in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.

Last Friday, Organised Labour issued a five-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the replacement of the police commissioner. They also pointed fingers at Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is seeking re-election, though the governor has denied involvement in the attack on the labour leader.

In addition, Organised Labour called for the arrest and prosecution of some of the governor’s aides, and warned of a nationwide strike if their demands were not met.

Subsequently, on Sunday, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, reassigned Barde for the sake of “neutrality” ahead of the November 11, 2023 governorship election in Imo State.
