Just In: Arsenal Legend Ian-Wright Criticizes UEFA Euro-2024 Rule (Details)
Arsenal icon Ian Wright has voiced strong opposition to UEFA’s rule in the ongoing Euro 2024 Championship, which automatically suspends players who accumulate more than one yellow card before the semi-final stage. Wright labeled the rule as “ridiculous,” emphasizing his disbelief that a player could miss a crucial semi-final match for receiving a yellow card in both the group stage and knockout rounds.
Previously, the convention was that yellow cards accumulated in the group stage would not carry over to the knockout rounds, allowing players to start afresh. However, UEFA’s current regulation states that yellow cards from the group stage do indeed carry forward into the knockout phase.
This rule has notably impacted Spain’s national team, with players Dani Carvajal and Robin Le Normand facing suspension for the semi-finals due to yellow cards received earlier in the tournament.
Wright expressed his frustration with the regulation during an ITV broadcast, stating, “It’s too much. You can get booked early on and then miss a semi-final much later in the competition. Some of these players [for Spain] will only realize the magnitude of missing a semi-final once they’ve settled down.”
The controversy surrounding this rule continues to stir debate among football fans and pundits alike as Euro 2024 progresses.
