According to reports from Ireporteronline, constituents have begun mobilizing registered voters’ signatures in the two local government areas to initiate the recall process. Following this, they formally notified the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, of their intention to recall the lawmaker.
Taking further steps, constituents have now notified the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, of their resolve to recall Jaji immediately. The grounds for the recall include poor performance, gross negligence of constituents’ needs, and divisive politics that have exacerbated the challenges faced by the people of the constituency.
The letter to the Speaker, submitted on May 22, 2024, has been duly acknowledged by his office, signaling the seriousness of the constituents’ resolve. Reports indicate that voters have turned out en masse to append their signatures to the letter, demonstrating widespread support for the recall process.
Bello Mahmud Birnin Magaji, chairman of the aggrieved members of the constituency, and Mustapha Ibrahim, their secretary, emphasized the importance of holding elected officials accountable to deepen democracy in Nigeria. They stressed that constituents will continue to demand transparency and accountability from their representatives, as sovereignty ultimately resides with the people.
“This is to avoid our blunder and miscalculation in electing Jaji,” they asserted, underlining the significance of ensuring that elected officials uphold the trust placed in them by their constituents.
The actions taken by Zamfara constituents underscore the critical role of citizen engagement in ensuring accountability and transparency in governance, signaling a proactive approach towards fostering responsive representation and effective leadership.
