According to Ireporter Online, the National Working Committee of the Labour Party, led by Julius Abure, has played down reports suggesting that its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is planning to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

A party official in Abuja disclosed that preparations are allegedly underway among Obi’s supporters and loyalists ahead of a possible move to the ADC. The official revealed that the former Anambra State governor reportedly held a meeting with the ADC’s National Chairman, David Mark, where he was said to have reaffirmed his alignment with the coalition following pressure from the party to take a clear position on joining its ranks.

The source further claimed that developments within the coalition may have influenced Obi’s decision, adding that a formal declaration rally is being planned in Enugu, widely regarded as the political hub of the South-East, on December 31.

Reacting to the reports, the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, stated that the party would avoid making any conclusive remarks until Peter Obi personally addresses the matter. He emphasized that any decision by Obi to leave the party would be based on individual considerations rather than a failure of the party’s structure.

Ifoh stressed that defections are common in Nigeria’s political space and insisted that the Labour Party would continue to grow and remain relevant irrespective of any individual’s decision. He noted that the party harbours no resentment but believes it would have been preferable for Obi to resolve any differences internally.

While expressing goodwill, the LP spokesperson maintained that the party had provided Obi with a strong platform during the 2023 elections and advised that reconciliation with party leadership would have been the wiser option. Nevertheless, he added that the party respects personal choices and would wish Obi well should he decide to move on.
