Lagos Establishes Task Force To Combat Noise Pollution

A statement released to IReporter Online on Tuesday outlined the government’s efforts to address excessive noise and protect public health, as shared by Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, alongside Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA).

“The Lagos State Government is dedicated to a zero-tolerance policy regarding noise pollution, especially during this festive season and beyond,” Wahab stated. “We are implementing proactive measures to mitigate excessive noise and protect public health.”

He acknowledged that increased celebrations and activities often result in louder noise levels during the festive period. “However, we must prioritize the health and well-being of Lagos residents by minimizing noise pollution,” he emphasized.

Wahab announced the establishment of a Special Task Force on Noise Pollution under the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency to ensure compliance with noise regulations. This task force, comprising members from the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, will monitor, apprehend, and prosecute offenders.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to a zero-tolerance stance on noise pollution, underscoring the significant health and environmental risks associated with unregulated noise, which will not be tolerated.

The commissioner pointed out that establishments such as worship centers, nightclubs, lounges, and bars are now required to obtain permits from LASEPA for public events involving amplified sound. These venues must operate within soundproofed and enclosed spaces to protect nearby residents.

Wahab also announced that in January 2025, the government would launch intensified public awareness campaigns to educate residents on acceptable noise levels and the advantages of a quieter environment.

Collaboration with various stakeholders, including religious organizations, business owners, the entertainment sector, and event planners, will be prioritized.

“Plans are underway to recognize and reward individuals and organizations that excel in following noise regulations, fostering a culture of responsibility and sustainability,” the commissioner assured.

He commended Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, for their leadership in promoting environmental sustainability and a healthier Lagos.

Wahab encouraged residents to partner with the government in creating a quieter and more peaceful Lagos, expressing gratitude to the media for their role in raising awareness about government initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life for all residents.
