Lagos State Government Extends Prohibition On Styrofoam And Single-Use Plastics For An Additional Three Weeks
In a recent development, the Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced a further three-week extension to the implementation of the ban on styrofoam and other disposable plastics…..CONTINUE READING
The decision was confirmed by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement released via his official X handle on Thursday, January 25.
The commissioner emphasized that the state’s priority is the welfare of its inhabitants, prioritizing public health and environmental conservation over the financial gains associated with styrofoam production.
“As a responsible government, the lives of the residents are far more important than the profit producers set to make from the continuous production of styrofoam,” stated Wahab.
The initial announcement of the ban on styrofoam and single-use plastics was made on January 21, citing concerns for the environment and public health. Wahab reiterated that these products pose a significant threat to the ecosystem, particularly during the rainy season.
Styrofoam, a petroleum-based material used in the production of food containers, was classified as a probable carcinogen by the World Health Organization in 2018, indicating an increased risk of cancer associated with its usage.
Despite previous restrictions on styrofoam in Lagos, the government remains determined to enforce the ban. Wahab underscored the extensive damage caused by single-use plastics to public infrastructure, especially during and after the rainy season.
The commissioner acknowledged the detrimental effects of styrofoam on human lives, the ecosystem, aquatic life, and the overall environmental nuisance. The extended timeline allows for a more comprehensive transition away from these harmful materials, aligning with the government’s commitment to a sustainable and eco-friendly Lagos.
