“Boiling Point Arena,” Obasanjo reflected on his administration’s efforts to secure debt forgiveness and lamented the current state of the nation’s finances.

According to reports, Nigeria’s debt surged by ₦12.6 trillion in just three months, reaching an alarming ₦134.3 trillion ($91.3 billion) by the end of the second quarter of 2024. This represents a 10.35% increase from the ₦121.7 trillion recorded in the first quarter.

Obasanjo warned that the ballooning debt could stifle progress, but expressed optimism that a turnaround is possible with the right leadership.

“During my tenure, we secured debt forgiveness, but now our debt profile is a major issue for this and the next generation,” he said.

Leadership as a Catalyst for Change

Highlighting examples of successful leadership, Obasanjo pointed to South Korea and Singapore. He praised South Korea’s merit-based system of governance and Singapore’s emphasis on integrity as pillars of national progress.

“The best way to combat corruption is from the top. In South Korea, leaders make appointments based on merit, creating a legacy of competence. Singapore’s focus on integrity has similarly transformed its governance,” Obasanjo remarked.

He also recounted a conversation with Singapore’s founding father, Lee Kuan Yew, during a visit with students from the Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute. Yew stressed that leadership must prioritize trust, service, and the welfare of the people over personal enrichment.

A Call to Action Against Corruption

The former president criticized those who view public office as a means of self-enrichment, calling for a “critical mass of individuals” committed to resisting corruption.

“Fighting corruption is not a one-time effort. It requires consistent action and leadership rooted in service, not greed,” Obasanjo stated.

As the nation grapples with its mounting debt, Obasanjo’s call for transformative leadership and accountability resonates as a reminder of the urgent need for change in Nigeria’s governance.
