Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, led a delegation to the site of the Ureje River along the Ado-Ijan-Ikare road on Saturday to supervise the retrieval of the body and its transfer to the morgue of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.
Residents of Ureje were gripped by panic upon waking up to the sight of a lifeless body in the Ureje River, prompting Governor Biodun Oyebanji to dispatch the delegation to the scene.
Addressing the community, Mrs Afuye emphasized that the victim likely drowned during Friday’s torrential downpour, which led to flooding in certain parts of the state.
She assured residents that the government would collaborate with security agencies to investigate the incident and determine the cause of death, using any identification materials found on the deceased to facilitate identification.
Mrs Afuye reiterated Governor Oyebanji’s commitment to mitigating flooding and safeguarding lives and property through effective policies and initiatives. She highlighted the government’s efforts in dredging waterways and canals to mitigate flood risks and urged residents to take precautionary measures during heavy rainfall to avoid unnecessary risks.
The Deputy Governor was accompanied by various government officials, including the Chairman of Ado Local Government, Commissioner for Environment, Director-General of Community Communications, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, the General Manager of the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency, and the Divisional Police Officer of Ado Ekiti Division.
